My great uncle served as a stoker in the Royal Navy during WW1 on the HMS Dublin a light battle cruiser .In 1915 the Dublin took a hit in A stokehold fired from an Austrian submarine which at that time were a menace to British and American shipping, sinking many ships. My great uncle was one of 13 killed that day on the 9th of June 1915.His body was the last to be found and this happened when they were repairing the ship some weeks later. Some sources like Wikipedia will say that 12 men were killed as he wasnt accounted for until some weeks later. He along with his 12 other comrades were buried in Brindisi Italy but were then moved in the 1980s to Barri cemetery .I visited his grave about 10 years ago and left a poppy reef to mark my respect. His name was John Edward Ritchie and he was 22 years old,he is commemorated inside St Thomas church Pendleton in Salford which was his home town May he RIP

Hi Mona, Thank you for spending the time to post the information. It would seem that a member has misidentified the John Edward Ritchie named on the St Thomas memorial. I have amended the entry (see here)I also note that we have identified his name on the Seedley Grove Presbyterian Roll of Honour. I presume that you are aware that there are two pages of Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Service for John on Ancestry showing that he had joined the Royal Navy in 1911?

Thank you very much for your response.I had never seen this particular Roll of Honour before and will forward this to my sisters who also have a keen interest in our ancestry .I wasnt aware that John had joined the navy in 1911 as the service record we have of him is very brief ,just says about his height and chest and skin complexion. And brother A (my grandfather)was next of kin.and that war gratuity had been paid {not sure who to?) He would be listed on the memorial in seedley as thats where his mother lived.I will look into ancestry Naval Register of seamans service as i seem to have overlooked some details. Thank you again for your response you have been most helpful to me
