Hello. I have some details on my grandfather. Where and when he enlisted. On his medal index cards there is an entry "RW Fus pte 49303" I'm curious when and why he headed up in the Royal Welsh. He was returned to the Inniskillen Fus eventually, where he picked up a MID and MSM in 1918. Any info on the RWF taking replacement s and/or details on private mccaigs actions for his awards would be greatly appreciated. I have the images and dates of his gazetted awards but no info on the actions. Many thanks

Graeme, In the absence of George's service record I am finding it difficult to answer any of your questions? Best guess is that George was injured or ill for a short time and was transferred to the Royal Welsh until he was fully recovered after which he was returned back to his original regiment (1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers). I suggest this as George's medal and award roll shows that he was at an Infantry Base Depot whilst with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Read more here about Infantry Base Depots Perhaps another forum member with a greater knowledge may have a better theory. Where was George from? Have you tried searching the local newspapers for any information published about him? I would try looking around the dates of his awards.

Many thanks to admin. That is new and interesting info regarding his posting to Infantry depot. George was from Belfast. I will try to research any archives they have. Thanks for the suggestion
