Hi. Some of you may have already seen this as I have already posted it on Facebook. I am looking for any information on my Great Grandfather Private Daniel Barry 5382. He was from Ordsall salford. I have just come back from his war grave in Cite Bon Jean military cemetery in Armentieres France. (pics attached). We have some war diary extract from the war records. I would like more as I believe Daniel was in the 12th for at least 6 months. So 6 months prior to 25th April 1916. I am hoping for a photo of my Great Grandfather as we dont have any. Or at least photos of the battalion around the time with the hope of maybe one might be Daniel as there are so many un-named people in photos. We have the original certificate and his 3 medals presented to the family 100 years ago. he never got to wear them. We also have 4 medals from his son (thats why there are 2 sets on the grave). So far, we have received records from the war office, seen his grave for the first time, found his obituary in the Manchester Evening News from 18th May 1916 so nearly a month after he died. I also found a memorial at St Clements church in Ordsall Salford. It doesnt matter what it is, any information would be brilliant. interstingly, the war records indicate that he was injured and died a few days later as a result of his wounds. However, i noticed that in the Manchester Evening News he is not in the 'Died of wounds' section but the killed section. Is this a mistake - significant? By all means I am happy for you to use the photos I have attached and put them in any relevant section on this forum. Many thanks Darren.

Hi Darren, Welcome to the forums. I have noticed that there was an article published in the Salford City Reporter on the 20th May 1916 (page 8). If you call the library on 0161 778 0814 I am sure that they will scan and email you a copy of the report. Let me know if you have any issues and I will visit the library and get a copy for you. Both Daniel's medal index card and Registers of Soldiers' Effects state that he was killed in action, but with the numbers involved in the Great War mistakes were made. His medal card also shows that he landed in France on the 16th July 1916 - for more info visit the excellent Manchester Regiment site. You write that you received some records from the War Office. What documents did you receive? I will see if I can fine anything further.
