Hello I am a Salford girl (though it is 50 years since I last lived there!). I am researching my father, William Romaine (b 1896) and his brothers Walter (b 1898) and James (b 1891) who all fought in WW1. My father obviously survived the war and was awarded the Military medal in 1917. Walter was killed in Belgium in 1917 and James was killed at Gallipoli in 1918.

Hello Lindapp, Thank you for spending the time to join. Your first post has been very helpful in helping to positively identify James's name on a memorial, both he and Walter are named on the St Luke's, Weaste memorial - salfordwarmemorials.proboards.com/thread/1447/st-lukes-weasteAre you aware that James's service papers are available on FMP and Ancestry? I will try to find some information with regards to the family and post later.

I am sorry to post that I was unable to find anything published in the local papers with regards to the Renshaw brothers. Some of the following information may help with your father - you may be aware of most of it. 1911 census shows Romaine Renshaw living at 4 Clifford St, Salford. Corporal, 4923, William Romaine Renshaw, 12th Manchester Regiment. Landed in France on the 16/7/1915, See www.themanchesters.org/12th%20batt.htm for more information. As well as the Military Medal he was also awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British War medals William's M.M. was shown in the London Gazette on the 19 November 1917 I cannot be 100% sure but I think he would have been awarded the M.M. for taking part in raids that were successfully carried out by the 12th Manchester during mid September 1917. An entry in the 12th Manchester war diary at the end of September 1917 states "10 Military Medals and one bar to Military Medal to various ORs" (ORs = Other Ranks). The raids had been extremely successful and a message of congratulations was sent to the battalion. William married May Nicholls at St Luke's, Weaste, in 1919. Please let me know if you believe any of the information is incorrect.
