Hello. I am a member of the Liverpool and Southwest Lancashire Family History Society. I am also involved in the Hispanic Liverpool Project which is run buy the University of Warwick. Whilst researching Liverpool families with their roots in the Hispanic world I discovered the Barbosa family. Their father was from Portugal and they were all born in Liverpool. Some time in the late 1890's the whole family moved to Salford. The daughter Mary J I Bell married Edward Bell, from Glasgow. During the First World war three of the sons Louis, John and Joseph enlisted in the 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, 1st Salford Pals. Lance Corporal Louis Barbosa died of wounds in a hospital in Rouen on 24th January 1916. Sergeant John Barbosa was killed in action on 1st July 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. Joseph Barbosa survived the war, dying in 1948. In the recently released 1939 register he is living at 50 West Ashton Street, Salford, with his sister, Mary J I Bell, more commonly known as Irene Bell. Joseph's occupation is shown as "incapacitated". That made me wonder if his incapacity was inflicted during the First World War. Does anyone know of any "wounded" lists for the Salford Pals that may be in existence?

After I posted the above I managed to buy a Kindle copy of 'God's Own' 1st Salford Pals 1914-1916 which contained the answer to my question above. Unless anyone can add to this?

Hi Mailajack, Welcome to SWARM. Pleased to see that you have found your answer. All I can add at this moment is that all Joseph's army documents spell his surname as "Barbossa". Hi Silver War badge entry shows that he was discharged on the 21/08/1917 due to sickness.

Hi Shred,
Many thanks for this information. I notice that there seemed to be a lot of discharges from the regiment in August 1917. Gassed perhaps?

Manilajack,
What information did the God's Own book contain with regards to Joseph? If we can pin down a date I may be able to check the battalions diary.

Would his service number be a clue? His was 10557 and his brother John was 10555 so I would guess they enlisted together.

I cannot find Joseph mentioned in the war diary but there are indications that the battalion came under gas attack in July 1917. This page shows the casualties for month ending 31/7/17.

Thank you so much for the information you have discovered. If they marched to Coxyde then they must have been in the Ypres salient. When I do type up the story of these heroes for the Hispanic Liverpool Project I will ensure that credit is given to SWARM. Thanks also to lester for the newspaper clippings. When it's done I'll post the link. Once again, thanks for your help.

Did you ever find out what happened to Michael Barbosa?

Michael joined the Army Service Corps as a driver in 1908. After a few months he deserted. The Roll of Honour in Liverpool Town Hall states that he died while serving with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. This information must have come from a family member. There is no record of him on the CWGC website. The God's own book mentioned that he was killed on 4/11/14. Paul on the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Facebook page is looking into it for me. It has been suggested that as Michael previously deserted he may have re-enlisted under an assumed name which we have yet to trace.

So we have Michael Barbosa born 1886 died on the 4/11/1914 (makes him 28 years old at death) serving with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment who suffered 52 deaths on that date. This may take some investigating.
I have noticed that the Salford Reporter printed an article, 05/02/16, after Louis death. I will get a copy of the article when I visit the Local History Library this Wednesday.
