MURA'S) CHURCH OF IRELAND CHURCHYARD Additional Information: Son of Joseph and Harriett Chapman. Cause of Death: Killed or died as a direct result of enemy action Official Number Port Division: 737038. Ship or Unit: HMS Laurentic Location of Grave: Not recorded Relatives Notified and Address: Mother: Harriett 4, Eldon Place, Eccles, Manchester 1911 census - a 15 year old clerk working at a builder and contractors office, living at 4 Eldon Place, Patricroft, with his parents Joseph and Harriet, and siblings Ernest, Jessie, Elsie and Nellie. "SS Laurentic was built by Harland & Wolff at their Belfast yard No. 394 and went down the slipway on 29th April 1909. A few months later, the same Belfast workers began construction on her famous cousin, Titanic. In 1917, SS Laurentic was chosen to carry forty-three tons of gold bullion from Great Britain to Canada. On 25th January 1917 SS Laurentic struck a mine and sank within an hour in 40 metres of water with a huge loss of life and all the gold bullion worth more than the reserves of most small countries in today’s values. An incredible salvage feat between 1917 and 1924 recovered 3186 gold bars of the missing 3211 with a further 5 being recovered in 1932 by another salvage operation, leaving 20 gold bars still unaccounted for at the bottom of Lough Swilly worth some £10 million at current prices."Visit the SS Laurentic site here

St Catherines Barton Frederick A Murdock Frederick Born Manchester Resident Barton Private Royal Fusiliers City Of London Regiment 20th Battalion 5363 Died 24/7/1916 CWG Not found Wendy CWGC entry: FREDERICK ALEXANDER MURDOCH Rank:Private Service No:5363 Date of Death:21/07/1916 Age:25 Regiment/Service:Royal Fusiliers 20th Bn. Grave Reference: II. C. 3. Cemetery:HEILLY STATION CEMETERY, MERICOURT-L'ABBE Additional Information:Son of David and Elizabeth Murdoch, of 30, Peel Green Rd., Barton-on-Irwell, Patricroft, Manchester. The newspaper report has his name wrong - it ends with an 'h' not a 'k' - and it is either wrong or very misleading about his School, because he attended Salford Secondary School for Boys, and his name is on the Old Salfordians' war memorial in the Peel Building of the University of Salford. He was born on 26th July 1890 and is one of the oldest on that memorial. One function the School had in those days was to serve as a pupil teacher centre for the borough. Within the School there was a stream of pupils being trained as teachers, some of whom went straight into elementary schools in the borough whereas others went on to training colleges around the country. Frederick's name also appears on the war memorial in the chapel of York St. John University, the successor institution to his old College. Several former pupils of his school joined this battalion, known as the 3rd Public Schools (hence the PS in the clipping above), but it was particularly popular with former pupils of Manchester GS. So many were killed in this action, the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, that there was a memorial service for them in Manchester Cathedral on the anniversary, which the Headmaster of SSSB and others from Frederick's School attended. Hello - I am new to your forum and I am the great niece of Lionel Gordon Morse. There are two newspaper articles on your board mentioning him with photos and I was wondering how I might find these to look at clearly?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Susan Galpin Canada

I know that Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society did memorial inscriptions. These include, if memory serves, a plan of the site. A copy should be held in the Local Studies section at Manchester Central Library. I had a copy of the MI's on microfiche, but cannot lay my hands on it at present. I don't think the microfiche contained any plans though, just the typescript text. I'll have a dig around and see if I can find the fiche.
