Hi, the memorial at St Catherine's church at Barton is in a poor state and some of the names have eroded and disappeared. The memorial was designed as an indoor memorial but it has stood outside for many years. There was talk of a shelter being build over it but I don't know whether anything was done about it. Perhaps the protection of this memorial would be an ideal project for SWARM?
I have some photos somewhere. I'll dig them out and post them.
Cheers Pete

Pete,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I will pop down and take a look. I have had a good chat with the chairman of the Eccles Community Committe tonight who is very interested in our project.
Do you remember who suggested a shelter?
Regards,
Garry

Gary,
I might be wrong, but I am pretty certain that the St Catherines graveyard is know owned by Peel Holdings.
Perhaps they should be approached as to the future care of this monumement, after all they do have a few quid in the bank !
Regards
Paul

there might be a good chance of salvaging the names on this memorial, but you would have too soak the front with water to highlight the names, you will then have a list of names if they ever decide to replace it,once these names have erroded, you will end up with another lost memorial, permanently

Mack,
Thanks for the tip. St Cathrine's is on my list for next weekend. I am pretty sure that we will be applying for War Memorial Trust funding for this memorial.

I have tried to take pictures of the memorial from lots of angles to see if we can make anything out, I am starting to pick out names some are extremely difficult to pick out. I will try to enhance some of the pictures later and will also try to make some negatives to see if this makes them any clearer. Your help and opinions would be much appreciated. Attachments:
