Hello.
Currently I'm researching A Spitfire XIV crash on the Achterdijk between the Villages of Nuland and Kruisstraat, Holland. On this place, the polder between Nuland and Kruisstraat, the RAF had a bombing practise area in the winter of 1944 and the spring of 1945. Frequently Spitfires that took of from the nearby airfields of B.88 Heesch and B.85 Schijndel practised their bombing skills by dropping bombs on a big white target. ( Some eyewhitnesses tell it was a big white pilar , other say it was a big white spot on the ground). On the 19th of March 1945, Soul David Lazarus of 322 Dutch squadron took off from B.85 Schijndel , also to practise bomb dropping. He flew to the pracise zone between Nuland and Kruisstraat and what happened after that isn't completely shure. Eyewhitnesses and an war two dairies tell tell the same story. The plane approached the big white target but they tell that the plane flew to far and that it was to close to the target to make a clear aim and drop the bomb. Everyone assumed the pilot would turn his plane and would go for another approach to get on the best alinement with the target. But even trough his plane was to close to the target he dived to the ground to drop his bomb. He released the bomb but because of the steep angle the plane was in the bomb ended up between it's propellors and exploded. The plane exploded in mid-air. Killing the 23 year old pilot instandly. Large pieces of debris were falling arround the target and people went to the crashsite. There they found the body of the pilot still strapped in his seat. He didn't had a change of escaping the plane. The most reliable reason of the crash is F/SGT Lazarus saw his target to late and that he put his plane into a dive by reflex to drop his bomb, not realizing that he was flying in a to steep angle to drop his bomb.
Soul David Lazarus ,23, came from Salford and was the son of the Jewish Abraham Lazarus and Fanny Lazarus ( née cosofski). Some sites tell his father was born in Austria and his mother in Russia but I'm not shure of that. He studied at Waterloo-Road school in Manchester and was a former member of the Grove House Jewish Boys' Brigade. His parents lived on Tetlow-Lane , Higher Broughton, Salford. He worked in the company of his father and he had a brother called Joseph Lazarus, Joseph was a Private in the Royal Corps of Signals during the war. Earlier on a news paper article was put in this site about him.

For my research I'm in search for living family members so I can tell them what happened and to learn about what kind of person Soul David Lazarus was. Maybe his brother Joseph has children. I have already mailed the Jewish Telegraph if they can put a call for his family in their paper. But I'm in search for any other ways to find his family. Are their any Jewish societies or groups in Salford that can help me finding his family? Or are their any local papers that I can mail with the question if it's possible to put a call for his family in their paper, or are their any local hsitorians that can help me?
The local History society of Nuland asked me to write a complete edition of their magazine about the war and the liberation. During the war two planes crashed in Nuland, Soul Davids Spitfire and the Messerchmitt BF109 flown by Hans Wellstein. Everyone in NUland knows about Wellstein's crash because the local history society published the pilot's family storie in therr magazine 13 years ago. In my edition that I have to write I want to spend special attention to Sould David Lazarus so also everyone knoews about his crash in 13 years, and that we don't forget this tragic accident. Finding eyewithnesses of the crash proved very hard because the plane crashed in the middle of nowhere. After six months a found two old man who are friends since the war and they were looking to the '' diving planes'' in 1945 almost every day. They told me of the accident and pointed out the crashsite. The plane exploded in midair so there are not many parts in the ground. But the two man told me to go to another fiend of them to speak with him about the crash. Shortly after the war in the autumn of 1945 there was a local competition between schools who could collect the most scrap metal. The local children were told of the plane's remains and they collected the metal that was left after they buried the pilots body at Orthen cemetery in 's Hertogenbosch. They colelcted everything they could find and won the competition. They won a school excursion to a radio station.
I hope you can help me with finding his family, or find ways to find them.
Already many thanks.
Regards Mike
