In memory of Acting Corporal Reginald South of the Lancashire Fusiliers who was killed in France 11th April, 1918. ADA MARGUERITE by Margaret Quilter (nee South)I think of spring’s first crocus display, So short a time since we were wed. My husband’s life was taken away. While birdsong resounds in the day, Sorrows lie in the trenches ahead. I think of spring’s first crocus display. Guns are muffled far away, So many words remain unsaid. My husband’s life was taken away. ‘Don’t give up hope’, the comrades say, Praying for their lives to be spared. I think of spring’s first crocus display. Flesh is grass, foreign fields grey, White daisies shroud the regiment’s dead. My husband’s life was taken away. War graves dug out, poppies sway, Obedient, we were willingly led. I think of spring’s first crocus display, My husband’s life was taken away.
