Mack,
Thanks for these. I will have to look through the newspaper archives to try and make a positive ID on Joseph Wallwork.

Captain Alfred Lee Wood Lancashire Fusiliers 15th battalion KIA 1/7/16 (can not find on CWG as medal roll also lists him as LEEWOOD and LEE WOOD) Miss F Leewood applied for late brothers medals 7/11/20 Address Arundel Bramhall Cheshire Probate 19/12/16 Captain Alfred Lee Wood of Arundel Bramhall Cheshire Captain 15th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers died 1/7/16 in France .Administration in London to Percy Lee Wood mining engineer effects £1029 4s 11d Born 1886 Clifton Captain Alfred Lee Wood Born 25/5/86, he was the son of James (died 1912) and Maria Ann Wood of Elm House ,Bolton Rd Clifton, where his father was the Secretary of the Clifton and Kearsley Coal Company. His brother Percy of the nearby Oakwood ,Clifton became the General Manager.
Alfred later lived with his mother at Arundell ,Bramhall Cheshire. He went to Southport University School and he gained a BSC at Manchester University where he was in the OTC. His brother Arthur was a director of the Lancashire Dynamo &Motor Company, and Alfred became the firms representative in India. He was commissioned Lieutenant 12/10/14 and promoted to Captain in November 1915.
His servant Private G Hutton recalled that on the 1st July the Captain was standing below the parapet calmly smoking a cigarette and glancing occasionally at his wrist watch. At 7:30 sharp he leapt over the parapet followed by his men. A perfect tornado of bullets was encountered from every side. Barely 50 yards had been when he was hit by a bullett, which grazed his head, whilst I got one in the arm. Without pausing we went on a little further, when a second bullett hit the Captain on the head, causing a nasty gash, and almost at the same moment I was shot through the leg. Turning to me Captain Lee Wood asked "are you badly hit? and I replied "Yes sir, I can't go on this time.
He then ordered me to try and get back to our trench, and although I begged him to to come back with me, as he was badly wounded, he said " No I will get that machine gunner.." Captain Lee Wood was a brave officer and one of the best. He was known to us as the "gaffer" and we would have followed him anywhere.
Soon afterwards Corporal J Beaver saw him hit in the head by a big piece of shrapnel. I quickly took his field dressing out of his pocket and bandaged him up; while doing so I was hit in seven places by a shell exploding 30 yards away. The Captain was now weak from loss of blood and I was wounded.
I volunteered to carry him to the stretcher beares. There was a trench leading from our trench to the Germans, so I tried to bring the Captain through , but I found it was to narrow for us to pass. I had taken his equipment off with the exception of his revolver, which I carried.I helped him over the top,and had not carried him above 20 yards when I was hit. I was shot in the left leg by a machine gun and the Captain was hit in the ribs. I pulled him back to the trench again and there he died. His last words were "Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Then he fell. I then managed to work my way to the stretcher bearers and there I met the Colonel and gave him Captain Lee Woods revolver. I was then taken away to the clearing station to have my wounds dressed.
Wendy Rest to follow later

on 10th sept 1914 a convoy containing the 42nd east lancs division set sail from england bound for egypt, later that month, they were in mid ocean when suddenly there was a flap on,smoke was spotted on the horizon, the cruiser escort broke off to investigate, thinking that it could be a german warship, suddenly a great fleet of ships appeared over the horizon,it was the army of india sailing for france,on board were the 1st manchesters, amongst them was dan jacks,as both convoys passed each other a great roar went up from both convoys. in this small piece of ocean there were over 50.000 men,on board the egypt bound convoy were thousands of men from all over lancashire,a great many from salford, many would never return home.
CSM dan jacks lived with his parents william+martha, jane at 2 moss st,clifton,he worked as a collier at the local pit,he enlisted in the manchester regt on 19-10-1903 aged 20,during his leave from france,he married miss florence, jane berry at st.peters church, swinton on 16th january 1915,florence lived at swinton schools, swinton where she was employed as the head laundress, dan returned to france, and that was the last time that florence saw him,on 11th december 1915,daniels battalion embarked at marseilles bound for mesopotmia, they disembarked at basra on 10th january 1916,daniel was killed two months later on 8th march

hiya wendy. your right about 34119 william aldred,he did serve as william allen.
pte william aldred enlisted in the RE before WW1,but purchesed his discharge,he then enlisted in the kings liverpool regt on 26-5-1913,he was convicted by the civil authorities of stealing a bicycle and served 10 weeks hard labour,on his release he was discharged on 4-4-14,then on the 19-8-14 he enlisted again into the RFA as 83361,but on his attestation he declared that he had never been convicted of a civil offence,he was later found out and handed over to the civil authorities and sentenced to 1 months hard labour, after his release from prison,he enlisted into the 8th loyal north lancs regt as pte 34119 william allen,he was killed in action on 4-8-1917 aged 23,he was a coal driller at the local pit and lived at 30 little moss lane, clifton, son of william+mary.
stealing bicycles was a common offence by soldiers, they didnt acually steal the bike, they just used them to get home because they had no tram or train fare and usually dumped them, but the civil authorities didnt look upon it as this, its a shame about william, cos all he did was borrow a bike, got convicted, then told a fib so he could serve his country and was locked up again, but undeterred,he enlisted under an alias, and got killed in action, its sad that a man like william had to die for his country under an alias rather than his own name, but he was determined to fight for his country, and paid the price.
a true soldier RIP william
