Tim,
I also took Groom to be his occupation prior to enlistment, if you look at the other mens' occupations on the same page "Spinner", "Barman", "Engine Cleaner" and "Clerk", I would assume that these are all descriptions of occupation in civil life.

Garry, I re-checked Drysaltery Works Roll Maroney G. Manchester Grocery 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers
Private Killed in action All the wrong names and spellings for Charles Moroney, but definitely the man on the Manchester Office roll which is also spelt wrong. The earliest casualty I've found for Balloon Street and sole Old Contemptible. Not forgotten. Thanks Tim

Garry, Thanks for trying. Does the 20918 number help trace a LF Bttn or likely enlistment date? Cheers Tim

Tim,
Numbers are all over the place: 20922 - 12th Batt 20920 - 2nd Batt 20927 - 3rd Batt 20929 - 12th & 6th Batt
The fact that there are a lot of numbers around 20918 where no war medals were issued would indicate to me that these numbers may have been attached to a reserve battalion. Maybe the 21st and 22nd? I am at the library tomorrow so will check the Salford Pals book for any clues.
