Tragedy struck at Troon where three Manchester Volunteers took a sailboat out to sea and were drowned. All appeared to go well until the boat reached the Black Rock at the south end of Troon. People on the shore saw the boat overturn. Despite searches no bodies were found. The men were all identified as B Company among them Harold Pickering aged 20. He was born in Salford and lived at Chaseley Lodge, Eccles Old Rd Pendleton. His mother Elizabeth Douglas Pilkington later lived at 74 Portobello Rd Hull.
