The article is very difficult to read so I have tried my best to do a transcription.
Gunner Harold Mather, 41 Townsend Rd, Pendlebury, who is reported killed in action on September 28th, is the second son of Mr and Mrs T Mather, 160 Station Rd, Pendlebury, to make the supreme sacrifice in the war. Deceased was well known in Pendlebury, Swinton and Clifton, and much sympathy will be felt with his widow and parents. An officer of the battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery to which he belonged wrote:- "It is with the deepest sorrow that I have to inform you that your husband was killed today. Lieut. Atkinson was also killed by the same shell which must have burst in the doorway of the dugout in which they were standing. He was one of the men who had been with my battery from the start, and every one of us mourns his ?death?. He will be buried tomorrow in a little cemetery behind the line." Gunner Mather enlisted in May 1916 and went to France about three months later. He was 28 years of age and leaves a widow and two young children.
The rest of the article is difficult to read so I will summarise
In civil life he was employed in the ?Electrical? Department of the Cooperative Wholesale Society, Manchester. He was a very capable ?pianist? and had several pupils under his tuition. His younger brother, Pte Thomas Mather was killed in France December 14th 1915 whilst serving with the Border Regiment. Deceased was for several years connected with the St Anne's Sunday School and Church, Clifton. His father is a member of the church choir.
