William Longworth born Salford enlisted Pendleton ,Manchester Regiment 2nd Battalion ,Died 14/8/16 CWG Choques Miltary Cemetery 1911 born 1879 , 10 Cotton St Broughton , occupation Railway goods loader Hi, I am sure that your research skills and knowledge are a lot better than mine, but the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway records show a W. Longworth working at Salford Goods yard, as joining the Cheshire regiment. I have checked against other railway companies and the only W.Longworth listed is with the L&Y. CWGC lists 11 persons of this name, but the L&Y memorial shows him as a Pte. which reduces it to 6. I had assumed that that the one one the L&Y memorial was - LONGWORTH, WILLIAM Private 28166 09/04/1916 Cheshire Regiment This would tie up with the 1911 census record, but obviously not the person listed above Glen

Glen,
As neither of the William Longworths CWGC listings have an age or extra information it would be difficult to be 100 percent certain.
SDGW gives the following for Private (28166) William Longworth, Cheshire Regiment: Birth Place: Harpurhey, Lancs Death Date: 9 Apr 1916 Death Location: Mesopotamia Enlistment Location: Manchester Rank: Private Regiment: Cheshire Regiment Battalion: 8th Battalion Number: 28166 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: Asiatic Theatres Comments: 55614, R.G.A
His service record is available on Ancestry it shows his occupation as a carter which matches with the information contained in the document that you have attached. Address is given as Miles Platting, wife is shown as Elizabeth, and children William, James, Thomas and Beartrice. No mention of Salford anywhere in his records. 1911 census confirms that he lived at 15 Walton St, Miles Platting. Occupation lorryman, railway.
I can see why Wendy has matched William Longworth, Manchester Regiment, with the William shown as living at 10 Cotton St, Broughton, there are three seperate family trees on Ancestry that have him as being killed in France on the 14/08/16.
I will take a look at the local papers when I visit Salford Local History Library on Wednesday. Hopefully we can get a definitive identification.

The person above is my man - thanks for the info. What I have seen on a number of occasions is the 1911 census showing a railway occupation but no mention of the name on my Railwaymen Died lists. Some may have left railway employment between 1911 and the outbreak of war, so were not in railway employment and therefore not included on the railway memorial/lists, others may not have been reported to the employer.
I have also found one who was not allowed to enlist but lied about his occupation in order to do so. From your extra info, I can agree there were two W. Longworth's both working in the rail industry in 1911, so hopefully we both have the right men in our lists.
