Broughton, Manchester Residence: Swinton, Manchester Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Manchester Type of Casualty: Killed in action Herbert, a 21 year old clerk, attested on 18th January 1915. Arrived in France on the 4th August 1916. The following pictures were kindly sent by Herbert's great niece. Herbert Shedlock Herbert and Alfred Shedlock (Alfred is named on the Roll of Honour) Sarah and James Shedlock visiting Herbert's grave Herbert's original grave marker Article from the Eccles Journal Information has been received by Mr and Mrs J A Shedlock , of 337, Moorside Rd, Swinton, of the death in action on January the 11th, of their second son, Corporal Herbert Shedlock, of the Manchester Regiment, In letters received from his officers and from the Company Quartermaster, a very high tribute is paid to Corporal Shedlock, for his qualities both as a soldier and a man. It appears that he took part in an assault at dawn, on the date named, on a German trench, and coming safely through took up his post in a captured dugout. As soon as the morning mist cleared the snipers became active, and he was shot through the head as he emerged to take a message to his officer. His Captain writes that he was universally beloved and respected by all who knew him – both officers and men – and that as a non-commissioned officer he was one of the most promising in the company. Sympathetic letters have also been received from several of Shedlock’s comrades in the trenches. Corporal Shedlock, who was in his 24th year, joined the Colours in January 1915. He first enlisted in a Manchester Territorial battalion, but on arrival in France in August last he was transferred with a number of others to a Service battalion of the same regiment. Before the war he was employed as a clerk by Messrs O’brien and Co, Lever St, Manchester. He is well remembered in football circles as a prominent forward in the “A” team of the Swinton Club, but his versatility in the game was so great that he could fill almost any other position in a team with equal success. He attended Worsley Rd Congregational Church and Sunday school. An elder brother of Corpl. Shedlock has been in France thirteen months in another battalion of the Manchester Regiment, but such are the effects of the war on home connexions that the brothers had not met for over two years.
