I don't have any 'osses myself - wish I did. I've 'started' five for other people, and 'school' dozens using the Join-Up technique though. I've never met an 'oss I didn't like!

Hiyoh spitfire,
I saw your gt granddads uniform, guessed he was a driver!. Carters!! yeah me granddad was a carter before WW1, he loved his osses he did!. Elaines Granddad was a driver in Royal artillery too. Those drivers must have been a very much wanted target!!, and a good one!, 6 horses, 3 mounted drivers and a huge carriage!! its a wonder any of those boys survived!. Saw a photo on ebay the last week, It answered a question for me. There came a point when horse loss was so great, the military were running short, so would virtually take any beast!, and I had seen WW1 pics with white/grey horses and considered how good a target they wood be against the mud of flanders!!, The photo I saw was a white/grey horse being painted dark!!, very sensible and probably saved many men and their animals, not to mention the artillery/supplies!.

Join Up as a method of training horses without using any force or violence. It's about talking to the horse in body language and reading the signs back. Starting is getting a horse to accept a bridle, saddle and rider. They used to use tying up legs and beating horses with a sack to make them do you want. This method is quicker and less traumatic for the horse. See www.montyroberts.com for far better description than I could ever possibly write!

Cheers Debs, Will check that owt later, cannot do it now, am keeping an eye on a couple of cards on ebay. Actually, I had a think about ebay/bidding, As I will be passing most cards onto SWARM, then it wold be good to know if you/anyone her intends to bid, so we dont push the price up by bidding against each other!! Don't know much about attaching to wagons, or even all the different types of gear. Just the few items I've used. I used to do private ambulance work, and we looked after Monty on several of his demonstration tours of the UK. I was impressed by what he did, and he showed me and a colleague how it worked and let us have a go. He's a great chap - and the Queen likes him to. He wasn't getting listened to 'til she stepped in and supported him!

Really looking forward to seeing the movie, which was filmed close to me, in Devon, Fortunately for Spielburger, I found out when they had almost finished, so he got away without me mythering him!. ;D Liz
