An article from a newspaper dated Dec 2nd 1915:
At Formby yesterday Mr. S Brighouse and a jury inquired into the death of Corporal E Stoker, South Wales Borders, drowned in the river Alt on Monday night.
Mrs. Rachael Cohan, of Widnes, said Stoker, who was 24 years of age, belonged to Salford. Before he joined the army, eight or nine months ago, he was engaged as a postal clerk.
The Coroner pointed out that the military authorities were doubtful about the name of the man. An officer produced a birth certificate showing that he was the son of Zullick and Jane Zachnowitch. The witness explained that the name was changed to Stoker because it was shorter.
The coroner: He is either Polish or Russian, but it is all right. They are our pals, are they not?
An Officer: Yes.
It was stated that Stoker and other soldiers walked into the river in the dark, and referring to this the Coroner said he thought the military authorities ought to make a better road for the men, as lives were very valuable.......
I have tried wild card searches on all the names without luck. Can anyone pin this man down?
