Robert, a 29 year old labourer of 128 Cromwell Rd, Patricroft, attested on the 24th Jan 1916.
To Reserves 25/1/16, mobilized 13/3/16, posted to the 22nd Lancashire Fusiliers 16/03/16. Transferred th the 17th Cheshires 21/05/1916. To France (attached to the Army Service Corps) 23/07/16. Transferred to the King's Liverpool Regiment (23 works coy) 09/02/17, transferred to 192 Labour Corps 26/06/17. Transferred to the Royal West Kents 01/02/18.
He was reposted as missing sometime between the 21st and and 28th of March 1918.
Died as a prisoner of war in Stendal POW Hospital.

Ship or Unit: HMS Laurentic Location of Grave: Not recorded Relatives Notified and Address: Mother: Harriett 4, Eldon Place, Eccles, Manchester 1911 census - a 15 year old clerk working at a builder and contractors office, living at 4 Eldon Place, Patricroft, with his parents Joseph and Harriet, and siblings Ernest, Jessie, Elsie and Nellie. "SS Laurentic was built by Harland & Wolff at their Belfast yard No. 394 and went down the slipway on 29th April 1909. A few months later, the same Belfast workers began construction on her famous cousin, Titanic.
In 1917, SS Laurentic was chosen to carry forty-three tons of gold bullion from Great Britain to Canada. On 25th January 1917 SS Laurentic struck a mine and sank within an hour in 40 metres of water with a huge loss of life and all the gold bullion worth more than the reserves of most small countries in today’s values.
An incredible salvage feat between 1917 and 1924 recovered 3186 gold bars of the missing 3211 with a further 5 being recovered in 1932 by another salvage operation, leaving 20 gold bars still unaccounted for at the bottom of Lough Swilly worth some £10 million at current prices."Visit the SS Laurentic site here |

1911 census - Walter is shown as a 12 year old school boy living at 19 Charlton Av, Patricroft, with his parents Harry and Sarah, and siblings Arthur, Harry, Annie, Edward, Albert and Elsie.
In March 1918, XIV Corps (the 7th, 23rd and 48th Divisions) relieved Italian troops on the front line between Asiago and Canove, the front being held by two divisions with one division in reserve on the plain. The French held the line to the left, with the Italians to the right.
The front was comparatively quiet until the Austrians attacked in force from Grappa to Canove in the Battle of Asiago (15-16 June 1918). The Allied line was penetrated to a depth of about 1,000 metres on 15 June but the lost ground was retaken the next day and the line re-established. Between June and September, frequent successful raids were made on the Austrian trenches.
