My husband's great grandfather died in 1916 in Flanders and his widow had a photo of him in a necklace pendant. Nothing unusual in that but on the reverse side of the pendant was a picture of another man. I know it's a bit of a longshot but we don't know who he is and wondered if anyone might be able to help. We do know that Elizabeth's brother, James Cross, also died in 1916 and think that it might be him but have no way to prove it. I've attached a photo of him on the following link, img819.imageshack.us/img819/9482/p1040034i.jpg

Sorry missed this thread.
Glad you got it sorted. I suppose that there aren't any clues on the back of the picture(if the picture is sealed/glued in the pendent please leave it in situ)
Edit:Is this your James?
James Cross - Private - 9731 Royal Warwickshire Regiment 16th Battalion. Killed in Action 30/08/1916 age unknown. Commemorated Ovillers Military Cemetery, XV. L. 3. James enlisted in Birmingham and entered France 18/07/1915

Yes that's him. Unfortunately the picture is sealed in the pendant and belongs to my father in law.

James is remembered on the Regent Square memorial, I am sure that I looked for an article in the Salford Reporter at the time I was researching the men and was unable to find one.
Could this be James in the 1911 census?
Name: James Cross Age in 1911: 25 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male Birth Place: Salford, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Aston County/Island: Warwickshire Country: England Street Address: 242 Aston Rd Birmingham Marital Status: Married Occupation: Glass Bottle Blower Registration district: Aston Registration District Number: 385 Sub-registration district: Duddeston
Family at the same address: Catherine Cross 28 Samuel Cross 6 Charles Cross 1/12 William Graham 26 Brother-in-law Mary Jane Graham 24 Sister-in -law Alfred Graham 3 William Graham 2
If this is your James it may be worth finding out what local papers were published at the time, they may contain a piece about him.
Good luck with your search.

James is also remembered on the family headstone at Weaste Cemetery, grave M 487. We can get a picture if you wish?

Yes that is the census information I found on ancestry. I know the family had moved to Birmingham as his great grand daughter has confirmed that via another cousin. I will try the local papers as you suggest, thanks for that idea.
If it's no trouble to get the photo I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.

Thanks for all the help you've given me in this search, it is very much appreciated.
My husband's cousin has some connections in Birmingham and is going to see if they can help with the local newspapers search.

I am glad that you received them and that they are helpful. The more modern grave was a stones throw away, not sure if it is one of your relatives.
Best of luck with the Birmingham look up.
