This may be the same man. Although the information provided on the National Roll does not agree with his medal card (not unusual). Attachments:

Hi Gary, you got any more details on this young man? He seems such a young pup to have changed regiments so many times? Any details of family or where he lived?

Ben,
I have posted everything I know about him up to now.
I agree with you that he looks a young chap which does not fit well with the Richard Murgatroyd from Ellesmere St, Eccles.

It seems that Richard is older than he looks in the picture. The following information is from 'Hell Let Loose' by Neil Drum and Roger Dawson. "Pte Richard Murgatroyd was shot in the back by a sniper on 6th June. Interviewed later, he said that before he was wounded he had lost many friends killed or wounded. During a bayonet charge, a bullet had glanced of his rifle and struck the arm of the man next to him, baring it from the elbow to the shoulder. The man on the other side was shot through the body and Pte Murgatroyd dressed the wounds of each in turn. He was working on reversing the parapet of a captured trench and spent six weeks in Alexandria before being sent to the UK. He was married and lived at 169 Ellesmere St, Patricroft. When he arrived home on leave on August 20th, the street had been decorated by friends and neighbours to welcome him. He had been with the Territorials for eight years and worked for Mitchell, Shackleton & Co, engineers."Attachments:

Ian, welcome to the forums.
This is the family in 1911 living at 169 Ellesmere St, Patricroft. Richard Murgatroyd 27 Annie Murgatroyd 27 Edith Murgatroyd 2 Thomas Murgatroyd 1 Margaret Smith 83 (Boarder)
This is the only marriage that I can see that fits: MURGATROYD Richard SHAMBROOK Annie 1904 Salford St Cyprian Salford Lancashire C23/2/91
It does look as if the couple had a child called Esther in the first quarter of 1917.

Do you think Richard could have remarried? There is a Richard Murgatroyd who married a Florence Clarke June 1/4 1919 Barton-on-Irwell register office.
