Can we help the family find any more info on this man please? Robert Collinge born Patricroft Private Manchester Regiment 1/5th battalion 1720 died 28/5/1915 CWG Panel 158 to 170 Helles Memorial Remembered on Christ Church memorial, Patricroft This is what the family say: "I have very little information although I have read somewhere that he was shot by a sniper. That was probably in the Eccles Journal. I don't have a copy of that article. He was my grandad's brother. His name is inscribed on his mother's grave in Peel Green Cemetery." I was just wondering if we could perhaps help them out with any more info? (and maybe even a better image of the pic?) the image is from the 1916 Eccles Journal printed Roll of Honour booklet here: www.salfordwarmemorials.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=pics&thread=1092&page=1#12411I have got a copy of his medal card for them If anyone is going to the library please could you get a copy of the Eccles journal article? robert was in C.coy,he and his pals had moved into the front line on 25th may 1915,they were working on trench improvements in the waterlogged trench up until he was killed, the turks were shooting at them from both flanks, robert and 10 others were killed outright and one man who was gravely wounded died shortly after at the field ambulance,13 others were wounded. two of those killed, were also from eccles, bugler 1414 john ferguson,21 silk st,eccles and pte 1526 george, william shepherd,8 birkdale grove, eccles, george was born in the christ church parish, but his name isnt on the memorial.
CSM 273 walter spencers body was the only one that was identified after the war out of those who were killed, the soldier who died at the field ambulance L/cpl 1557 william davenport, was buried in lancashire landing cemetery.
theres a possibility that robert is buried in redoubt cemetery under a headstone marked "known unto god"along with his 9 mates who were killed that day,CSM spencer is buried here.

Thank you for so much information in so short a time. His brother Thomas, my grandad, who was a farrier in the North Lancashire Regiment and was gassed at Ypres in 1916, didn't know much about his brother's death.

The Private T Collinge was probably my grandad who was invalided out of the army after the Ypres Gassing. He was recovering in Essex when he met my grandmother.

heres a snippett that will amuse you. the westminster dragoons were on the same ship as the 5th battalion when they sailed for egypt, one of the dragoons officers complained that he had spent two weeks cooped up on a ship with the uncouth, clog dancing common soldiers of the 5th manchesters, shortly after, some soldiers found a way of obtaining beer outside of permitted hours, one of these men was found drunk and behaving dreadful,he was thrown into the brig, the dragoons officer assumed that he was one of the manchester lads,he was shocked and embarrassed to find that the soldier was one of HIS men
