I am at Salford Local History Library right now and looking again at the photograph of the Whit Lane memorial. I can only make a couple of the names of the soldiers listed in the central section of Killed soldiers, due to the original photograph being unclear. The serving names are not a problem to transcribe as these are fairly clear, being white on black. I will persevere here and see what I can accomplish.

Further to my earlier post about the Whit Lane Memorial (Shrine), I can only make out a handful of the names of the killed. However, I have been able to arrange to borrow the negative, and I will look into the possibility of improving the image from the negative and see if this may allow a better copy in print.

Just have to work out how to use the transparency adaptor on the scanner now. Can I ask you to keep everything crossed for a while in the hope that this will work and allow the names of the killed to be recorded?

I went yesterday, to Cleveleys to see my 'Old Whit Lane Aunt '....I wanted to know if she could tell me any more about the Whit Lane Memorial...
All she said was, she used to look at it nearly every day, as it always looked nice, with flowers etc...At the time she was only a child..
She said Mrs Buckley, that lived on the Irish Row, looked after it. Mrs Buckley was always dusting and polishing it.. My aunt, does'nt know if Mrs Buckley had a relative on the memorial...
On a lighter side to the story, My aunt remembers photographs being taken of the memorial. She says, that all the children that took past in the photo, were given a toffee each....unfortunately she was only small, and could'nt get near the front...
I could have stayed there all day, the old Salford story's she told me were Fantastic!!!!!!

I wonder what Mrs Buckley would say if she knew it was missing after all that care and attention she took of it

Just to keep everyone updated: Jim has done a fabulous job of enhancing the photograph of the Whit Lane memorial and a list of the men is currently being indexed from this. The central panel is still VERY difficult to read but we are getting there slowly
