Peter, Steve has transcribed the medal card for you. John was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal otherwise known as the Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. He disembarked in France on the 23rd of November 1915. The 1914 - 1918 site gives the following information on the 16th Lancashire Fusiliers; 16th (Service) Battalion (2nd Salford) Formed in Salford, 15 November 1914, by Mr Montague Barlow MP and the Salford Brigade Committee. Moved on 28 December 1914 to Conway and on 21 June 1915 to Catterick. 21 June 1915 : attached to 96th Brigade, 32nd Division. Moved on 13 August 1915 to Codford and formally adopted two weeks later by the War Office. Landed at Boulogne 22 November 1915. Link to the 1914 - 1918 site www.1914-1918.net/

Private John George Brookes himself. In the picuture of the company that Shred kindly uploaded we think JGB is back row, third from the end on the right. Though we're not certain - any opinions please ??!? My brother visited Scared Trinity today and had a look at the memorial in the church - I went but it was closed. There is a stone memorial to the WW1 dead in the actual churchyard, struggled to make out names though. This has been an exciting journey for my whole family ! Many thanks for all your help. Peter,
Many thanks for the picture, it is wonderful to see. Do you mind if I try and clean/enhance the picture? I will post my efforts after I have finished.

Is there any way in finding out if his medals were claimed/given to his family ?

From the information that Steve posted with regards to the medal card it would seem that the medals were issued and sent to the family. When family members could not be found the medals were returned and after a certain period of time the medals were destroyed.
WW1 medals can no longer be issued to family members.

Peter, Best I could achieve with a low res image and some of the damage/pen marks around John's face are next to impossible for me to enhance, a pro may do better. Attachments:

Peter, You may be interested in submitting some information/pictures for inclusion in a book that is currently being written about the 16th Lancashires. Please take a look at this thread.
