Memorial PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL Additional Information: Son of Fred and Gertrude Tunnicliffe, of Swinton, Lancashire. Completed on 22nd June 1939, HMS Bramble (J11) immediately took part in the salvage operations for HMS Thetis (submarine). She started the war minesweeping in Home Waters and was hit by bombs off Harwich in February 1941. After refit, she carried out convoy escort duties in the Western Approaches. In October 1941 she sailed with other Halcyons for Archangel, taking part in eleven convoys and carrying out many other duties while in Russian waters. On 31st December 1942 while returning from a search for stragglers of Convoy JW51B she met the German battleship Hipper and was badly damaged, later being sunk by the German destroyer Eckholdt. Birth Place: Salford Residence: Salford KRAKOW RAKOWICKI CEMETERY - Those buried here died while prisoners of war during the German occupation, most of the graves coming from the cemetery at the large camp at Lamsdorf, Stalag VIIIB (after 1943 known as Stalag 344), where there was a hospital of 450 beds used only for Commonwealth prisoners. Before this hospital came into being the sick at Lamsdorf were treated at the hospital at Langenbielau: those who died were buried in Langenbielau Catholic Cemetery, and these graves were also moved to the Commonwealth plot at Krakow. Other graves brought into the cemetery were those of airmen who lost their lives during the Warsaw supply drop and the bombing of factories, railways and other strategic objectives. Thomas Maybury MM, died 1951 Thomas served with the Royal Field Artillery (180975) during the First World War. In the 1911 census Thomas is aged 23 living at 15 Kersal View, Pendleton, his occupation is stated as an electrical engineers clerk. Thomas is living with his Gran; Ann, and her two daughters Alice Ann and Martha Jane. Thomas' Military Medal was gazetted 13th March 1919 link to gazette The gazette entry shows that Thomas must have been living in Irlam during his WW1 service. He was entitled to the Victory and British War medal (along with his MM). Attachments:
