"The body of a First World War hero has been brought home to Greater Manchester – as the region pays its respects to the fallen.
Sir Gilbert Mackereth saved a patrol cut off by a German machine gun post during the capture of the French village of Gricourt in April 1917.
The Salford-born Lancashire Fusilier was awarded the Military Cross for his ‘gallantry and bravery’."
