William's medal card shows that he arrived in France 23/11/1915 and was entitled to the 1915 Star, Victory and Bristish Medal. He is also remembered on the memorial at St Peter's Swinton and at Sacred Trinity Church, Salford.

Arthur Douglas Hanlon of the Royal Artillery who died in a military hospital in Lincoln on the 20th Feb 1919 aged 24. There isn't any information on CWGC for Arthur.

Stephen Edward Rye, Quarter Master Sergeant, Royal Sussex Regiment died 27th June 1914 aged 51.

Stephen Rye was born in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. A labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment on 30 August 1881, aged 19 years, 6 months. With the regiment he served in the Mediterranean, 1882-85, Egypt, 1885 and South Africa, 29 March 1901-14 March 1902. Attaining the rank of Colour Sergeant in 1889, he was discharged at his own request in 1907.

Frederick Belshaw M.S.M. died aged 68 on the 11th July 1954. He had served with the 2/4 Oxford and Buckinghamshire regiment, service number 200909.

Douglas was aboard Lancaster ED383 coded LS.C when it overshot the runway at Lakenheath on its second attempt to land after retuning from a raid on Augsberg, the Lancaster overturned after hitting soft ground and burst into flames, poor visibility was a critical factor in the cause of the accident.

Charles had served aboard the HMS Hurworth which was sunk on the 22nd October 1943; On Trafalgar Day, 21 October 1943, HURWORTH left Alexandria for the last time, with the cruiser AURORA, her ‘chummy’ ship ADRIAS, and the Fleet Destroyers JERVIS and PATHFINDER of the 14th Flotilla, as NETTLE Force, to carry out operations off the islands. Operation ACCOLADE had not gone well. The Americans were supposed to have provided air cover, which did not happen, the Germans were supposed to have been driven off Rhodes and its airfields, and that did not happen either. What had happened was that the islands of Kos, Kalymnos and Leros were occupied by the British and Greeks (and their new Italian allies), but one by one, the Germans retook them, (and executed any Italian officers they captured), until only Leros held out. With virtually no air cover, the only way to supply the garrison at Leros was for the Navy to get to neutral Turkish waters, lay up by day, and hare in under cover of darkness, unload, and race back to Alexandria before the Germans had a chance to sink them. Some strategy.

The ship run into a small minefield, laid perhaps the previous day by the German minelayer DRACHE, which was also to claim the destroyer ECLIPSE, (Commander E Mack, DSO DSC RN) with 119 of her crew, Commodore Percy Todd, and 134 officers and men of The Buffs, a day later. The islanders of Pserimos had watched the field being laid, but had no way to alert the Allies.

Charles showed great courage and bravery both during and after the sinking for which he was awarded the George Medal.

"For gallantry in saving life when HMS HURWORTH was lost. Able Seaman Russell was very badly burned, but helped to launch the motor boat and when one of the slips jammed, he kept his head and by unshackling the deck clench got the boat clear just before the ship sank. With four other hands he then took the boat ashore and lay up for the night. At dawn he slipped out unobserved, made his way past enemy shipping and returned to the scene of the sinking. In two trips he picked up thirty-eight survivors and landed them on an island. Able Seaman Russell was in charge throughout, and but for his undaunted courage, determination and seamanship, it is unlikely that many of the survivors would have been rescued."

Charles died two years after the sinking of the Hurworth due to the wounds that he had sustained.
