If anyone is interested, Pete Thomas (me ) and Neil Drum are giving a talk on Irlam and Cadishead’s involvement in WW2: - Friday, 14th October at 7.30pm - St Helen’s Church, Hollins Green - £2 admission (all proceeds to Friends of St Helens) Everyone is most welcome. We're 75% of the way through a book on the district's involvement in WW2 (following on from "A District At War") and will be presenting some of our research finding. Cheers Pete

Sounds like a very interesting evening. I am sure that Spitfire or Hurricane will post this on the Facebook page.

I managed to attend this event this evening.
In front of a large audience Neil and Pete gave an excellent presentation of a small percentage of the information that they have gathered to date. The research and presentation was first class. The book is going to be a must for any war historian.
The highlight of the night for me was when Pete and Neil asked a number of Irlam and Cadishead WW2 veterans who had attended to have a group picture taken after which a spontaneous round of applause erupted.
Well done to Pete & Neil.

Thanks Garry, I'm always too nervous when I do the talks. There were 10 vets there. I won't post their names but here is a quick summary of some of their experiences:
- One was evacuated from Dunkirk - One was with Montgomery's Eighth Army - One was a Navigator on Lancasters (survived a crash) - One landed in Normandy on D-Day - Two served with the Royal Navy, on board HMS Renown, the other on a submarine depot supply ship HMS Maidstone - One was a POW of the Japanese (captured when Singapore fell)
Glad you enjoyed the night and your support was most welcome.
Cheers Pete
