He and a fellow soldier, Alfred Longshaw, had deserted and were later caught in civilian clothing stowed away on a ship at Dieppe. His family were informed that he had died due to gun shot wounds, it was a few years later that Albert's father discovered that the description of how his son had died was a half truth. His father had the following inscribed on Albert's CWGC grave at Bailleulmont Cemetery: Shot at Dawn One of the first to enlist A worthy son Of his father I have posted part of Albert's medal card which shows that his medals were forfeited as per army rules of the time.
