I am from New Zealand and was thrilled to see the memorial for Eric Standring. Eric Standring was born and brought up in New Zealand. He joined the Otago Mounted Rifles at the start of the War. He was shot in the arm and leg at Gallipoli and transferred to Malta and then to England to recuperate. His father, James Standring had been born in Bury and went to New Zealand as a young man. Thomas Mansergh was a boyhood friend of James Standring so when Eric was released from hospital he came to stay with his father's friend. He had a whirlwind romance with Doris Mansergh (Thomas' daughter) and Eric and Doris married secretly at the Salford Registry Office on Christmas Eve, 1915. Some remaining letters from Eric show that he and Doris were very much in love. Doris arranged for this tablet to go on her mother's grave to remember him.

Harold Thompson, auctioneer and valuer at 11 Queen St, Albert Square, Manchester, the father of Frank and John was informed about the death of his son John on the 19th July 1916. Knowing that his elder son, Frank, had received wounds at the same time as John he wrote back to the Army asking for further information (copy of letter here under). John & Frank's brother Albert also served in the 18th Manchesters (10730). The service numbers of the 3 brothers would seem to indicate that they all joined the army together. Another brother William was serving with the 1/8th Masnchesters. Name: REDFERN, ROBERT LEIGH Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Manchester Regiment Unit Text: 1st/6th Bn. Age: 23 Date of Death: 04/06/1915 Service No: 2461 Additional information: Son of Alice M. Redfern, of The Gables, Bramhall, Stockport, and the late John E. Redfern and Name: REDFERN, ALFRED JAMES Rank: Private Regiment/Service: South Wales Borderers Unit Text: 1st Bn. Age: 23 Date of Death: 27/08/1916 Service No: 42113 Additional information: Son of Alice M. Redfern, of The Gables, Bramhall, Cheshire, and the late John. E. Redfern. The Redfern brothers, Robert Leigh & Alfred James, are both on the civic memorial in Bramhall. Robert was initially reported missing in action, and it was a whole year before his family were told he was dead. A couple of months later his brother Alfred was killed. As you can see above, both were 23. Robert had been secretary of the Wesley Guild and played for Bramhall cricket club and Bramhall football club, of which he was the secretary. Both boys had been in business in Manchester, with their father, who by now was also dead. The births of both boys were registered in Salford, and they had an older sister and a younger brother, young enough - one hopes for his mother and sister's sake - to have missed the war. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Grave 3739. Cemetery: KERSAL (ST. PAUL) CHURCHYARD Bert, as he was known, attended Salford Grammar School and gained his School Certificate in the summer of 1938. The family home was 37 Great Clowes Street, and he was engaged to be married to a lady called Mona. The Squadron, based on the Lincolnshire coast near the Humber estuary, had recently reequipped with 2-seat Bristol Beaufighters, but was not yet operational. Given that a Flight Sergeant (Observer) from 254 Sqdn. also died that day, and given that both bodies were recovered and returned to their families, it looks to have been a training accident. The memorial plaque the School had for the dead of WW2 did not have names on it, and it would seem it did not survive the demolition of the school buildings in 2008, which the WW1 plaque did.

I believe that the image below is the Salford Grammar WW2 memorial plaque that oldsalfordian refers to. Please get in touch if its whereabouts are known.
