ALASTAIR M STEWART, Lieutenant Commander,

A CLIMBER died yesterday after falling 700ft in Glencoe.

Alistair Stewart, a 31-year-old naval officer, lost his footing while attempting to come down a difficult rock route shortly before 2pm on 3657ft Stob Coire nan Lochan in the Lost Valley above Glencoe.

Police were alerted by a mobile telephone call from another climber who saw the fall.

A rescue operation was mounted by police and Glencoe mountain rescue team and a Sea King helicopter was scrambled from HMS Gannet in Prestwick. Mr Stewart was flown to the Belford Hospital in Fort William where he was certified dead.

Last night, the team leader of Glencoe mountain rescue, John Grieve, said: ''I think that the climber, who was on his own at the time, was trying to come down from a popular route known as the Gearraonach Ridge.

''The proper way to come down is a route known as Zig Zag but there are some sheep tracks up there which can easily be confused with paths.

''It looks as if he came off the ridge too soon, with tragic consequences.'' A man who witnessed the fall, Robbie Taylor, an American climber who lives part of the year in a cottage in Glencoe, initially told police in Fort William that he thought that two people had fallen, but this was later discounted as he accepted that it was the dead man's rucksack that he had seen.

A spokeswoman from Faslane Naval Base, where Mr Stewart was based, said he was single and from the Manchester area.
He was an engineering officer on board HMS Vigilant and had been in the Navy since 1986.

The vessel's Commander Charlie Reid said: "This is a tragic loss to us all.
"Alistair was an extremely gifted officer who undoubtedly had a bright future ahead of him.
"His death is a very sad loss to the Royal Navy and our heartfelt condolences go out to both his family and friends at this very difficult time."
