Walter Darbyshire. The below article appeared in the Cadishead and Irlam Guardian on 22nd December 1945 (one week after the family received official notification of Herbert's death). Unfortunately the original newspaper which was used for the microfilm was badly damaged and part of the article is missing. Attachments:

Hi Tony, it's me (Pete)! I've got a better photo of both Walter and Herbert which Bomber provided (the Darbyshire brothers were relatives of hers). I posted these because I don't think she's seen these articles before.
P.S. I was born in Prospect Road, Cadishead, which is my I chose this name.

Message for Bomber, Tony did some fantastic research work for us on the WW2 Royal Navy casualties on the Irlam and Cadishead war memorial. This includes info on HMS Anking and what happened to her and the Yarra. If you would like to send either Tony or me a message with your email address, we'll email the info to you.
Cheers Pete ;D

Hi Tony, another year at least. We've got good drafts for all of the war years except 1939 and 1944. Plus we need to type up about 15 hours of recorded interviews with local veterans, work on pre and post war sections and also add the 100's of photos that we've been lucky enough to find. So far, we written about 500 pages so it's going to be a monster!
Cheers Pete ;D ;D ;D

Pete,
Another book in the making? Cant wait!
I am sure it will be as wonderful and well researched as a District at War. All the best with it.

Thanks Tony, Garry and Jim for your kind offers which I'd like to take up but I'm not sure how at the moment. I'll list out what we've done so far and perhaps it might highlight some angle that we've missed.
- Irlam and Cadishead war memorials and rolls of honour - CWGC database - review of the Cadishead and Irlam Guardian (1936 to 47) - Home Guard Rolls (held in the Archives in Preston) - Taped interviews with veterans (about 10 so far) - Advertising in the area for photos and info - Internet searches relating to Irlam and Cadishead in WW2 - RAF accounts of crashes related to local men - RN accounts of sinkings (thanks again to Tonyrod) - Memories of local people - Local History Society and local historians - MOD records for my Grandad (as you'll be aware, WW2 records haven't been released yet so only family members can request files)
There's probably more that I can't think of the moment. Any suggestions of other sources would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Pete ;D ;D ;D
