Hi Timber, Neil Drum and I wrote a book called A District at War (published 2010) which describes Irlam and Cadishead's contribution to the Great War. It lists almost 1100 men from the district who served in the war, including 211 casualties. Unfortunately, it does not include David. The incorrect spelling of Cadishead (misspelt as Cadshead) in Soldiers Died in the Great War meant that we missed him. Thanks to your post we've done a little research (his service records didn't survive the Blitz) and added the below to the draft of the 2nd Edition of the book (which we hope to publish next year). Do you have a photograph of David that we could use?
David Garwell - Died of wounds 22nd April 1915 Acting Bombardier David Garwell (Service No: 69904) served in 53rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery, 2nd Brigade, 6th (Infantry) Division.
David was born in Cadishead in 1892, the son of John Thomas and Elizabeth Ann Garwell (nee Thompson). At some time between 1901 and 1911 the family moved to 14 The Grove, Flixton. David worked as a railway porter before enlisting into the Army in Manchester. He went overseas to the France and Flanders theatre of war on 11th September 1914 and served with Royal Field Artillery.
David died of wounds on 22nd April 1915 and was buried in Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension. Medal entitlement: 1914 Trio.
