2nd Lieut Cyril Thompson, 1st June 1918. This is the Cyril Thompson who is also on the Old Salfordians' war memorial in the Peel Building of the University of Salford. The family home, Branwood House on Clarendon Road, was later acquired for a school, and Branwood House Preparatory School occupied it from, I believe, 1926 to 1984. I suspect Cyril was a teacher and would love to know where. In 1911 he was a student at St. Mary's RC College, Hammersmith, along with fellow Old Salfordian Francis Purcell. Francis became a teacher in Salford. He also lost his life and is on the Corporation war memorial in the old Town Hall.

Fusilier Douglas J H Banbury M.M., 13th Jan 1940. Also served during WW1. DEATH OF PATRICROFT FUSILIER Military Honours at Funeral Full military honours were accorded at the funeral at the Peel Green Cemetery, on Wednesday, of Fusilier Douglas Joseph Henry Banbury (40), of Owen St, Patricroft, who died in hospital, on Saturday. An ex-Serviceman, Fusilier Banbury had joined the Lancashire Fusiliers in June last, and was librarian at the Bury Barracks when he became ill. During the last war he joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers as the age of 18, and in September, 1918, gained the Military Medal for an act of conspicuous bravery. He successfully attacked a raiding aeroplane with a machine gun from the ground, and brought the plane down. He was wounded in the leg, and was the victim of a gas attack, but at the conclusion of the war he was not demobilized, but carried on his military service with the Black Watch. In 1920 he was discharged on pension, and in the same year was married. He was a member of the working men’s club at Patricroft, and a member of the bowling team there. He had been a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service, and four A.F.S. men followed the coffin to the cemetery, whilst members of the Fire Brigade paraded at the front of the Fire Station as the cortege passed. Seventeen soldiers of the Lancashire Fusiliers acted as escort for the coffin, under the command of Lieut. Church, and at the graveside, as the coffin, draped with the Union Jack, was lowered, a firing party fired a volley and then the bugler sounded the “Last Post.” The Funeral service was conducted in the Cemetery Chapel by the Rev. C B Martyn Johns (Vicar of Patricroft), and the Rev S T James (Curate), and among the mourners were Messrs I Platts and G Heath, of the Workingmen’s Club. Fusilier Banbury leaves a widow and two children, a son aged 18, and a daughter aged 12.
