There is one other memorial to a soldier in the church; that of Major Thomas Drinkwater. The Memorial reads: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOMAS DRINKWATER MAJOR OF HIS MAJESTY'S 62ND REGIMENT OF FOOT WHO PERISHED AT SEA ON HIS RETURN FROM THE WEST INDIES ON THE 22ND OF APRIL, 1797, AGED 32 YEARS Thrice had his foot Domingo's island prest, Midst horrid wars and fierce barbarian wiles; Thrice had his blood repelled the yellow pest That stalks, gigantic, through the Western Isles Returning to his native shores again, In hopes tembrace a father - brother - friends Alas! the faithless ratlin snaps in twain He falls - and, to a watery grave, descends. Thomas was the son of a Salford Doctor called John Drinkwater, his mother was Elizabeth Andrews. The memorial was erected by his only surviving brother, Lieutenant- Colonel John Drinkwater. Thomas had distinguished himself in the first campaign in Saint Domingo in 1793/4. He was returning home on His Majesty's armed ship Calcutta when an accident caused his death. An eyewitness gave an account of his death: Colonel Hamilton of the 81st Regiment, who was on the same vessel, ordered the guns on the quarter deck to fire a few light cartridges after which Major Drinkwater, who had repeatedly expressed his wishes to see the effects of musketry from the tops, ordered a party of the 62nd Regiment into them, and went himself to the main top. When the firing had stopped, and he had seen that all his men were safely down, some ratlin broke as he descended and the roll of the ship threw him from the shrouds. The ship had been travelling at 10 knots and dispite every effort to save Thomas he drowned. Thomas' father died whilst his son was on the way home, 23rd March 1797. Attachments:

hiya gary. theres a full list of the salford pals who are on these plaques in michael stedmans book about the salford pals
with regards to the war memorial, there may have been a dedication service when it was erected, which may have been published in the papers or there may have been a church service, they usually had a list of names on these occasions, you need to find out when the memorial was erected,i know it was after 1921 because james helicon who is listed on the memorial, died in stockport in 1921,he was shot through the spine in 1918 and crippled for life without the rest of the names, this memorial is partly lost forever

A gentleman in the church has checked all the church records, he can find minutes regarding fund raising etc.. but cannot find a list of names. He has checked the Salford Reporter without success. I am hoping someone has a postcard or a picture showing that particular face of the memorial.
