Garry, have you any idea why the Eccles Co-op Memorial is in Stretford and also whether it is safe?
Cheers Pete

Hi Pete. If I understand and remember it correctly, the plaque was purchased by the owners of the Trafford Hotel when the Eccles Co-Op Hall closed (don't presently have a date for this?). The reason why they chose to purchase it is not presently known, but they did, and have kept it safe and preserved ever since, for which I'm sure we're grateful. In terms of its safety, I would regard it as being about as safe as any memorial really can be. Garry will possibly know more, having been to see it, and possibly spoken to the present owners or management?

Thanks Jim, it's a worry when they are held privately. The problem is that the situation can change if the property is sold, and the building is refurbished. The memorial was probably purchased some time ago (Last year I managed to prevent the sale of a railway memorial from Wigan which was advertised on Ebay).
Cheers Pete

Pete,
I would say that the hotel managers are very proud to house the memorial. They were very upset when a couple of "guests" recently tried to inscribe their nicknames on to the memorial using a key (you can just see this damage above the mens names). The management are arranging to have this damage repaired soon.

Samuel Allcock and Walter Bridge must have been very close friends. They both serve in the same regiment and their service numbers are within 13 numbers of each other & their wives lived at the same address.
Name: ALLCOCK, SAMUEL Initials: S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Corporal Regiment/Service: South Lancashire Regiment Unit Text: "C" Coy. 9th Bn. Age: 33 Date of Death: 18/09/1918 Service No: 14947 Additional information: Husband of Annie Allcock, of 34, Robert St., Patricroft, near Manchester. Service on the Western front 1915-16; 1917-18 Eastern front. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: VI. B. 6. Cemetery: DOIRAN MILITARY CEMETERY
Name: BRIDGE Initials: W F Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Serjeant Regiment/Service: South Lancashire Regiment Unit Text: 8th Bn. Age: 28 Date of Death: 22/05/1916 Service No: 14960 Additional information: Husband of Alice Bridge, of 34, Roberts St., Patricroft, Manchester. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: II. A. 28. Cemetery: ECOIVRES MILITARY CEMETERY, MONT-ST. ELOI
I can confirm that Annie Allcock was living there when Samuel enlisted on the 07/09/1914. Maybe Alice Bridge went to live with Annie after he husbands death?
BTW Samuel Allcock's service record can be found under the name of Tom Allcock (alias).
