St Annes Brindlheath John R Tonge (Richard) Temp Lieutenant Lancashire Fusiliers 15th battalion died 16/12/17 CWG 111.D.19 Duhallon ADS Cemetery Age 23 Born Swinton son of John and Ann Tonge of 41 Andover St Eccles John Richard Tonge son of John and Ann of 229 Littleton Rd ,and later Andover St Eccles. Attended St Annes Church Brindleheath, then St Peters School Swinton. Worked at Togo Kills Patricroft. Became Sergeant then to commission 21/7/16. Temp Lt when killed in action.Lt Col. H K Utterson wrote"He was killed by a shell early on the morning of the 16th, and the same shell also killed one man and wounded two others. He was popular with both officers anf men, and was one of the best officers I have known, absolutely fearless and always cheerful and willing to undertake any task however unpleasant or dagerous. He was my signalling officer and I shall find him hard to replace. In action on December 2nd he especially distinguished himself , and I recommendee him for a Military Cross Wendy

Hi Re the St Anne’s Memorial, you have listed a James Gordon, stating too many to pinpoint. This name should be JAMES GORTON. He was the son of Mrs A Gorton, 8 Mossfield Place, Brindle Heath. He was a Private in the Lancashire Fusiliers and died on 30.6.1915 age 20 years. He is buried at Redoubt Cemetery, Helles.
