I can't see anything of help. Maybe Jim could pop over there and ask?

I'll be going to my Grandad's tomorrow, so I'll try to have a rummage around and see if I can glean any further clues while I'm there. I'm taking the webbook and scanner anyway, so I can look through the old family photos and things and see what I can find.

Cheers Debs. Hopefully I might find something useful tomorrow to shed some more light on things. Fingers crossed!!! Many, many thanks for all your efforts though. I'm really grateful for your help. Knowing so little (I'm not even 100% certain the medal card relates to my great-grandfather, as I do know there was another Samuel Arthur Shelmerdine of about the same age, somewhere in south Manchester as well.)

Spoke to my Grandad today, and he doesn't remember anything about his Dad serving in anything other than the Manchester Regiment, and being wounded twice in the arm. However, he does have Samuel's medals somewhere, and is going to dig them out so I can look at them. However, at this stage we think that the service numbers from the medal card I found relate to the other Samuel Arthur Shelmerdine, and not my great-grandfather. I will update as I find new information. Cheers to all for your efforts.

Having found the medals, my Grandad has checked the inscription on them, and his father's (my great-grandfather's) service number WAS 4976.

Tony,
Those Manchester Regiment service numbers must be complicated if different battalions were issuing the same numbers. Don't suppose family historians were their first consideration at the time.
