BELGIUM: Patriotic military medal for the 1914 battles of Liege, Fort Waelhem and Nieuport. On the obverse: The portrait of the Roman General and politician Julius Ceasar in helmet and his saying "The Bravest of all the Gaules are the Belgians". On the reverse: The Belgian Lion and the 3 battles (Liege, Fort Waelhem and Nieuport). The medal is signed by P. Theunis and Fonson and Paul De Boiss. Diameter: 19.4 mm The Belgian Army defended Liege against the assault of the German forces in 1914 ( 5 -16 Aug.). The city garrison of 70.000 Belgians and 12 forts managed to repulse the initial attacks of the German 2nd Army (General Ludendorff, 320.000 men) but the city finaly fell to the German hands.
