Hi John,
Welcome to the forum.
Your grandfather's number, and medal card would indicate that he was not one of the original men to be placed in the 19th Lancashire Fusilier Battalion. From memory most of the original men had numbers 17xxx, 18xxxx, so he may have been transferred from one of the other battalions.
A brief look at the 19th movements during The Great War shows:
19th (Service) Battalion (3rd Salford) (Pioneers)
Formed in Salford, 15 January 1915, by Mr Montague Barlow MP and the Salford Brigade Committee. Moved in March 1915 to Conway and on 21 June 1915 to Catterick.
21 June 1915 : came under orders of 96th Brigade, 32nd Division.
Landed at Le Havre 22 November 1915.5 January 1916 : transferred to 14th Brigade in same Division.
29 July 1916 : transferred to GHQ and converted to Pioneer Battalion.
7 August 1916 : transferred to 49th (West Riding) Division.
linkBut his medal card shows that he was only eligible for the Victory and British War Medal. The absence of any entry against "Star" and "Date of entry therein" tells us that he joined the battalion sometime after 01/01/1916.
I cannot find an entry on CWGC so I am presuming that he came home from the war. May I ask if he was from Salford?
