Hello everyone, My name is Marilyn and I was recommended by a friend to visit this forum because I am trying to find information about my Granddad. He was Joseph Edwin Briscoe, he was killed in France in August 1917 when my Mum was a baby. All the information about him was lost during the blitz in WW2. We found his grave from the CWGC and visited it last year.

hiya Marilyn your grandfather enlisted on 10th November 1914 as private 15676 joseph, edwin Briscoe, kings own royal Lancaster regt, but due to defective eyesight he was discharged on 26-6-15 as permanently unfit for service,he resided at 26 Buckingham st,salford with his wife alice and two daughters alice+lily,he worked at the brewery as a bottle washer.born 4-3-1890 he married miss alice Oakley at christ church, salford on 17th august 1910 daughters alice born 16-12-1911 and lily born 17-10-15,agnes was born the following year, both alice and lily were baptised at Christ church. killed in action 20-8-17,three days after his wedding anniversary.
he would have re-enlisted not long after his discharge, how he got past the doctors with his bad eyesight is a mystery, theres no doubt that he was keen to serve his country.
alice received 7 shillings pay and 3 pounds war gratuity
alice remarried in 1921 the former pte 18225 peter chatterton[kings own royal Lancaster regt]of 11 Christopher st,salford
