The foundation stone of the Eccles War Memorial, designed and executed by the Manchester sculptor, Mr Cassidy, is to be laid on Saturday afternoon by the Mayor Ald. R. Evans J.P., and it is hoped that the unveiling of the completed memorial will take place about the end of July. There will be a short religious service at the ceremony tomorrow. A procession will be formed at 2.30 in Milton Square, Milton Street, Patricroft, in front of the disused public baths, and will proceed via Shakespeare Crescent, Liverpool Road, Peel Street, Wellington Road, and Church Street, to the site of the memorial and it is expected that the ceremony will commence at about 3.45p.m. A number of seats will be provided for disabled and infirm ex-Servicemen, and others unable to bear the strain of standing during the ceremony.
The Mayor and Committee offer a most cordial invitation to all Members and Officers of Public Bodies and Institutions within the Borough, to be present and take part in the ceremony, and particularly the following:
The Town Council.
The Borough Rench [sic]
Other Public Bodies and Institutions.
The Local Branch of the British Legion,
Ex-Servicemen, Relatives and friends of those for whom the memorial is a token of sacrifice.
The British Red Cross Society, and other similar ambulance orginizations.
The Local Battalion of the Territorial Force.
Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Church Lads' Brigade, and Boys' Brigade.
War Memorial Committee.
The numerous street war memorials are now to be removed and the record placed under the memorial in the Town Hall Square. The residents of Station Road, Green Lane, Renshaw Street and Ellesmere Street are grateful to the Mayor and Memorial Committee for granting the privilege, and also thank Messrs Henry Pennington and Sons, plumbers, Patricroft, for the gift of the leaden casket for that purpose. The records are as follows: Station Road - 174 men, 44 killed; Green Lane- 203 men, 19 killed; Renshaw Street - 119 men, 16 killed; Ellesmere Street - 161 men, 17 killed, total 657 men, 96 killed.
