From 'A District at War': George Gillespie – Killed in action 1st July 1916Private George W.T. Gillespie (Service no. 11905) served with the 1st Battalion, The Border Regiment, 87th Brigade, 29th Division. He was born c. 1874 at Aldershot, Hampshire, the son of Robert and Lilly Gillespie. He had a sister, Elizabeth M. (born c. 1872 at Canterbury, Kent) and three brothers who were all born at Barton: Robert J.R. (born c. 1877), Joseph A. (c. 1879) and Herbert (c. 1884). George was unmarried and resided with his sister at an address in Peel Green Road, Peel Green, Eccles. He was an ex-scholar of St Catherine's School in Barton Street, Eccles. George worked at Eccles Magnesium Metal works. He had previous military experience, first as an Eccles Volunteer and later as a Signaller in the Territorial Force. His brother, Herbert, resided at 6 Alexandra Grove, Irlam and was, doubtless, the link between George and the district. In 1914, at the age of 38, he enlisted into the Borders at Manchester. He disembarked at Gallipoli on 31st July 1915 and joined the 1st Battalion of the Border Regiment, which had been in Gallipoli since April. After the evacuation from Gallipoli in December he served in Egypt between January and March 1916. In March the 29th Division was sent to France in preparation for the July offensive on the Somme. George was killed in action on Saturday, 1st July 1916, aged 40, in the area south of Y Ravine, near Beaumont Hamel. He is not listed on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial but he is commemorated in Joseph Cooke's 1917 Official Record and Roll of Honour. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and also St Catherine's War Memorial at Barton-upon-Irwell. Medal Entitlement: 15 Star Trio.[img src="[/img] "]

From 'A District at War': John William Johnson – Died of wounds 24th August 1915Private John William Johnson (Service no. 13942) served with the 11th (Service) Battalion, The Manchester Regiment, 34th Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division. He was the son of Noah and Mary Ann Johnson of 9 Talbot Road, Davyhulme, Urmston and his father was a well known Baritone vocalist. John resided at 7 Primrose Terrace, Urmston and he had previously lived in Patricroft. He was initially employed at the CWS Soap Works in Irlam and is later believed to have worked as a fitter at the British Westinghouse Company in Trafford Park before enlisting at Manchester in 1914. He enlisted, along with a number of local men in November 1914. The 11th Battalion disembarked at Gallipoli on 14th July 1915 and on 6th August they took part in the assault landings at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. John was wounded during fighting in Gallipoli and died on board a hospital ship on Tuesday, 24th August 1915, aged 32. He was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli. His name does not appear on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial, but his link with the district is signified by his inclusion in the 1917 Official Record and Roll of Honour compiled by Joseph Cooke. He is commemorated on the War Memorial at Davyhulme (Nag's Head circle) and also the Barton-upon-Irwell War Memorial at St Catherine's Church, Barton. Medal Entitlement: 15 Star Trio. Just read all this and have to say Councillor Christine Turner worked hard to get Peel to take on the upkeep of this cemetery as it was in a very bad state for many years. my children's great great grandfather is commemorated on the war memorial. There is a transcript of all St Caths graves at the Local history library at Waterside. One of the war graves B Bills is their Gt Uncle. I do have a photo of the war memorial from about ten yrs ago and you could just make out the names then.

Caroline,
Welcome to the forums, thank you for joining us. The last time I visited the cemetery it was in not so bad a state, free from litter, grass cut, etc... there were some areas that had become overgrown with bushes and brambles these areas looked like they had been like this for some years though.
One of our members "Hurricane" has a copy of the graves transcript.
Would you be kind enough to provide a scan of the picture that you took of the memorial?
Regards,
Garry

I visited St Catherine's war memorial last week and then popped into Salford local history library- I managed to find a cutting from Eccles and Patricroft Journal dated 14th October 1921 which listed the names on the memorial. Rather than list them all again, I've just highlighted the ones that are missing or are different. William P ALLEN Jeffrey BROGDEN George F BURNS William CAMPBELL John J CASH Joseph CHAPMAN John W CLARK Samuel CONCANNON Henry CORDWELL Charles CRIMES Harry CUSSACK Edward H GIBBINS David D GRAHAM Walter H HARRISON Patrick J HIGGINS Charles HOMES John W JOHNSON Arthur JONES Fredrick JONES Patrick LONG Peter MADDEN John F MITCHINSON Job D NICHOLS John N ROYLE. According to the newspaper, eight bells were also dedicated as well as the memorial, I don't suppose anyone knows what happened to them.

Sorry for the delay in responding, based on the names in the 1921 article, a few amendments still needed.
Edwin CONNELL should read Frank CONNELL No Amos CRAILS on the original list Harry CUSSACK should be Harry CUSACK No David GRUNDY John JONES should read John E JONES Lionel MORSE should read Lionel G MORSE Fredrick A MURDOCK should read Fredrick A MURDOCH No Bruce BARCHARD listed ( Could this be a later edition as it appears to be at the end of the list and not in alphabetical order)

are you certain the name is bruce barchard,i cant find anyone who existed with this name, also theres no david grundy on this memorial if a correct and complete list of names can be compiled, then its possible to save this memorial,it would only take a couple of hundred pounds to have three brass panels made, bearing the names, and they could be fixed to the existing memorial, its too late to do anything with the original names because they are too weather beaten, ime sure someone from the area would pay for the cost
