Sapper is the Royal Engineers' equivalent of Private. Ben

He is listed as Sam Eckersby on the medal index card and medal rolls. There's not much information:
Sapper 88511 Sam Eckersby, Royal Engineers, first disembarked in France on 3rd September 1915. He later served as Sapper WR289295 Sam Eckersby, Royal Engineers, sub-unit: Railways.
Hope this helps Pete
