Hi
I've just signed up to the forum because I'm researching a relative who was a Salford Pal.
Edwin Bateman, who is mentioned quite a bit on the various forums, was my great great grandad's nephew on my mother's side. My mother's maiden name was Bateman. Edwin was in the 16th battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, and died on the second day of the Somme, July 2, 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval monument and on the memorial in the church in Eccles. Other than that and the newspaper cuttings on this forum I don't know much about him. I only found the cuttings yesterday, which included a photo of him. That was the first time I had seen a photo of him. My mum passed away when I was a teenager and we don't have any of his medals or papers. I saw his death plaque came up for auction on eBay last November but unfortunately it had been sold before I saw the listing, otherwise I would have tried to secure it for my family. If anyone has any information on Edwin I'd love to hear from you. This is a lovely forum and I think it is so important we remember the incredible sacrifice Edwin and so many others made for his country. Paul Middleton

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. The only additional information I can find is that the Eccles & Patricroft Journal (6th October 1916) stated:
"It was also reported that the bodies of some of the July casualties had been found and recovered from land ‘now in British posession’, all, with the exception of Private Wakefield who was killed on 1st July, were killed on the 2nd July. They were Lance Corporal Bateman, Privates Routledge, Potts, Wakefield, Murden and Brooksbank. None of these men have a known grave and it is therefore presumed their graves were lost in later fighting."
Hope this helps Pete

Paul I've just started research 'E.Bateman' whose is listed on family headstone 'A 2968' at Peel Green Cemetery. On stone it stated his name as Edward as do the papers of the time, showing the family living at Alma Street in Eccles At this address on 1911 census there is no 'Edward' but there is an 'Edwin' I have him as L/Corporal 12515 8th platton 'B' company 16th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. His parent were James and Emily His brother Andrew was a trooper in the Dulke of Lancaster Yeomanery contact me direct at tidtracer@blueyonder.co.uk

He was my grandads cousin (is that same relationship as you?). I have scoured the internet and would love to find a photo. Would you have one?

Thanks so much for that. Really chuffed with it. I don't know if you can assist again, but I have another relative (Edwins cousin), called Harold Hulmes. He died 1917 at Ypres. I recently visited his grave at Reninghelst. Im desperately looking for a photo of him.

Hi Hhulme, I couldn't find anyone called Hulmes in one of three Reninghelst cemeteries who died in 1917. Could you please provide a bit more info such as service number, battalion or regiment?
Cheers Pete
