I figured that I should move my original post in this matter to this thread in order to not tie up the "welcome" thread.
So far you guys have been very helpful and quite fast in responding, It helps when you know where to look and what you're doing.
So here is the relevant information I have so far. I have removed that which is inapplicable so as not to complicate the things:
My original post:
Hello,
I lived in Lower Broughton from around 1948 to 1966.
My Grandfather John Buckley fought in WWI as did his brother.
My grandfather sustained a bayonet wound to his gut and after much hospitalization he survived his wounds and went on to enjoy his life until around age 71. As a child of around 11 I remember seeing the large somewhat indented scar on his abdomen and I remember sitting next to an old chest reading all the medical reports and circumstances in regards his wounds and recovery, but alas as the family has died off all of that information has gone. As a result I am trying to find out more about him, when he signed up, where he was posted, which battle he sustained his wounds and any other relevant information I can find. From his medal 1914-15 Star Ribbon Blue, White and Red, S-838 Private John Buckley Rif: Brig:
My Grandfathers brother also fought in WWI he was killed in action but I don't have any information about him I believe his name was Wally, or Wallace Buckley. From a medal of his that I have 1914-15 Star, ribbon blue, black, white, gold, white, black, blue 13570 private W. Buckley E. Lan. R. which I assume is East Lancashire regiment. I would like to know more about him, when he signed up, where he was posted, and in which battle he was killed and any other relevant information I can find.
Any help appreciated!
Also I have a website which I am accumulating information about Salford, you can visit it here www.mysalford.com

Silver war badge ( Silver wound badge as it was commonly known ) explanation link
The Badge number: 508590 is just what it say's it is, the badge number nothing more. John's service number was: S/838
Other forum staff/members should be able to give you more details about where he served & when?

Mysalforddotcom,
Welcome to the Salford War Memorial's forum.
A little additional information:
John was posted to France and disembarked there on the 20/05/15 and was awarded 1914/15 Star, British War, Victory Medal & the Silver War Badge (as posted by Ben).
Wallace was posted to Gallipoli and landed there on the 14/06/15. He was also entitled to the 1914/15 Star, British War & Victory Medal, these would have been sent to a family member after the war.
I will check the local papers for any reports that may have been published when I visit the Local History Library next week.
Garry
BTW I like the website. Keep up the good work.

Garry thank you for your input.
When you say papers do you mean newspapers? The only medals I have are the two 1914-15 Stars one for each of them, I suspect the others (silvers) are lost, I have three other medals one is a Burma Star of my Fathers who was stationed in India and then Burma, and I have two Silver medals from 1939-45 one is a defence medal and the other has a lion defeating a dragon.
I arrive in England next week I will be there for about two weeks as I have one week in Europe also. But I fully intend getting a least a day where I can do some research. About how far do the census records go back? I am wondering if I can dig up some information on my grandfathers parents and possible marriage information and maybe even birth info.
Thanks I will place a link to this SWARM site onto my Salford site. I have much data and images to upload yet which will most likely take a while but I won't get to it now until after I return from my trip.
Thanks for all the help.

I notice i am posting these st on the introduce yourself thread should i switch my replies to a different thread?
