Private Henry Gorst, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Ordsall Lane, Salford. A REMARKABLE RECOVERY. Soldier's Speech Returns After Twelve Months. The story of bow Manchester soldier recovered his speech after being dumb for more than twelve months is a remarkable one. The soldier, Private Henry Gorst, who joined the Loyal North Regiment shortly after the outbreak of war, lives at 196, Ordsall Lane Salford. In September, 1916, he came home on leave for ten days, and two months later was admitted into hospital abroad suffering from shell shock, as a result of which he entirely lost the power of speech. He was operated on, but a cure could not be effected, and subsequently he was sent to England. He is at present Didsbury and Withington Hospital, and on Tuesday evening visited his sister. His brother Frank was home on leave, and the dumb soldier was very excited on meeting his brother, whom he had not seen for fifteen months. During the evening Henry, being unable to speak to has brother, wrote a slip paper " Sing me 'My Mother's Rosary.'" and when the song had been half sung, suddenly, and without any apparent physical effort. Henry joined in. His relatives were as surprised as the soldier himself, and wondered what had happened. Nevertheless, after a few minutes, he was able to join in all conversations, and can now talg as plainly and with much ease as he could before the war.
