Fallen men of Salford WW1 John Cook born Turton enlisted Salford, QMS Lancashire Fusiliers 1/7th Battalion ,Died 13/5/15 Home CWG Salford Weaste Cemetery Age 53 Long service and good conduct medal ,son of James and Mary Cook of Turton ,husband of Catherine Cook, served in South Africa and Sudan Campaigns From hell let loose CQMS John Cook aged 53 was invalided back to the UK in April, when the Battalion was preparing to sail from Southampton ,he was on duty as a trooping sergeant. He saw a soldier fall from the SS Dilwarra into the harbour and dived in and managed to save the drowning man. CQMS Cook died in the early hours of 13th of May and was buried in Weaste Cemetery. He was a groom in the Transport Section ,and his officer Lt Teague wrote to his ftaher Anthony Raffo of 130 Regent Rd Salford to explain that he was returning from the trenches as a mounted orderly and riding behind a wagon , when the wheel of the vehicle passed over a live cartridge on the road, which fired and hit your son in a vital part. John had worked as a carter for Cowans a carrying firm of Manchester. The family later moved to 14 Collier St ,Liverpool Rd Manchester. Wendy
