Thanks Ben, I am pretty sure that the following is the John Aitken named on the memorial: JOHN AITKEN Rank: Signalman Service No: C/JX 186236 Date of Death: 07/02/1943 Age: 31 Regiment/Service: Royal Navy S.S. Mary Slessor Panel Reference 70, 3. Memorial CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL Additional Information: Son of Edward Wallace Aitken and Elizabeth Aitken; husband of Ellen Aitken, of Manchester. It seems that the CWGC have recorded his father's name as Edward Wallace instead of Wallace Edward. His parents marriage: Marriage: 22 Sep 1890 St Peter, Swinton, Lancashire, England Wallace Edward Aitken - 21 Collier Bachelor of 7 Holland St. Swinton Elizabeth Burrows - 19 Mill-hand Spinster of 7 Holland St. Swinton Groom's Father: Robert Crighton Aitken, (dead), Surgeon Bride's Father: Thomas Burrows, Baker Witness: John Nice; Hannah Barlow Married by Banns by: F. P. Nash Register: Marriages 1888 - 1897, Page 52, Entry 103 Source: LDS Film 2356300 The 1911 census shows the family living at 9 Arthur St, Moorside, Swinton. John has not yet been named. i will try and check that this is correct on my next visit to the SLHL.

The old plaque is just outside of the main entrance. The WW1 names are the same as the ones inscribed on the new memorial which is inside the church.
