CYRIL HIRAM TOWNSEND Rank: Sergeant Service No: 1623085 Date of Death: 17/08/1944 Age: 20 Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 102 Sqdn. Panel Reference Panel 239. Memorial RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL Additional Information: Son of Cornelius John Townsend, J.P., and Sarah Townsend, of Salford, Lancashire. Cyril was my great-uncle, only two years older than my father and regarded by him as his brother. Nearly twenty years ago, with tremendous help from the RAF, 102 Squadron and others, I researched the story of his last flight for my father; the family never really knew what had happened to him. He was lost on the night of August 16/17th, 1944 as navigator of a Halifax flying from RAF Pocklington to Kiel. His aircraft was never heard from again after take-off, not claimed by the Luftwaffe and never found, and is assumed to have malfunctioned and gone down in the sea. Thank you for the photo of the memorial, it's good to have that and to know that he was remembered at his school; he's never forgotten within the family. All their names are inscribed in the book of remembrance at St Clement Danes, the central church of the RAF in London, where a page is turned every day; on the day that my father visited the church not long before he died, it was open at the page with Cyril's name. Here he is. Attachment Deletedwww.facebook.com/groups/bombercommandmemorialLouise

Cemetery:DARLINGTON WEST CEMETERY Additional Information:Son of John William Brown and of Sarah Ann Brown (nee Hughes); husband of Gwendolen Brown, of South Shore Blackpool, Lancashire From - www.yorkshire-aircraft.co.ukWellington Z1724 near Danby Wiske. On 1st March 1943 the crew of this aircraft were undertaking a navigation exercise and took off from Middleton St.George at 14.20hrs. Half an hour after taking off the aircaft was seen flying level and at a height of around 2,000 feet near Danby Wiske. Without warning to witnesses on the ground the port wing was seen to collapse and the aircraft dive into the ground from around 1,500 feet. There was no time for anyone to escape the aircraft and all on board were sadly killed. An investigation found that a failure in joints in the main spar had resulted in the port mainplane collapsing. The crash site was near High Brockholme, between Danby Wiske, Yafforth and Streetlam.
