James was born in Salford in 1913, the son of John and Veronica (nee Cunningham) Branney. The H.M.S. Gloucester was sunk during the Battle of Crete on the 22nd of May 1941, 722 lives were lost.

Edward died with his parents Edward and Annie. During a heavy air raid they had taken shelter in the cellar of 31 Stowell St, but it was not protection enough against a direct hit.

I now know why I am struggling to identify some of the men on this memorial. They did not all die during the Second World War. The years shown after each name can only be the years that they attended the college... for example John Dill did not leave until 1949!

EDWARD F RAINFORD Edward was the O.C.P.D. (Officer in Command of Police District) in Rawang, Selangor, he was killed, aged 26, when the military vechicle that he was travaling in was ambushed by bandits on the 20th August 1951. An article from The Straits Times, 22nd August 1951 states: Bandits who killed the officer in charge of the Rawang Police District, Selangor, Mr Rainford, yesterday, stripped off the Distinguished Service Order ribbon he won in Italy, from his tunic. Mr Rainford, aged 26, was killed as he lept from a police wireless car to attack two groups of bandits who had laid ambush for him and his men.
Edward is also remembered on the St Mary's Church, Swinton, memorial.
